Prerequisites for choosing the town to twin with

During the millennium year of 2000 a small group of us met together to explore ways of impacting poverty in poor parts of the world. The group consisted of doctors, teachers, overseas development workers, church leaders and others. Our remit was to link our town of Pontypridd with a town in a developing country, in a way which would encourage a genuine partnership, and cultural exchange rather than dependence and charity. In order to take this forward we set out the following prerequisites for which country and community we should choose.

Country

  • One of the poorer developing nations

  • Easily accessible (not too far away, inexpensive air fares)

  • English as a second language or widely spoken

  • Tolerance to overseas visitors

Community

  • About the same size as Pontypridd

  • Willingness of Voluntary Organisation & Government to work together

  • Keenness to work in partnership with us

  • A clear insight into their own unmet needs

  • A vision of how we could help them achieve their goals
