Dr Geoff Lloyd of Pontypridd and Pastor Apollo Mwenyi of Mbale Uganda were presented with the medals by the Chancellor at the awards ceremony. In his acceptance speech Dr Lloyd related how witnessing deaths in a camp during the Ethiopian famine in 1985 provided the impetus for the formation of PONT. He described the recent growth of PONT as being like a snowball rolling down a mountain side.

Mr Apollo Mwenyi is Chairman of Mbale PONT and pastor of First Baptist Church and has been a highly engaged worker against poverty in Mbale. He likened the partnership to a marriage wiith both partners having an equal voice. He explained that an African marriage is an event in which the whole community takes part. He described the way in which the PONT partnership is having an impact throughout the Mbale district.
